BRAND IDENTITY | ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN | TYPOGRAPHY | ICON DESIGN | ILLUSTRATION
Originally named Carter G. Woodson, the George Washington Carver STEM Academy came to us with a complete rebranding project and only an initial logo design.
After some consultation, we decided to elevate the logo to the next step and add in a cohesive branding to their school that brought out the fun and imagination of science, using educational iconography with science fiction imagery.
BRANDING
ORIGINAL LOGO
For the logo, I wanted to drop some of the unnecessary and outdated elements in order to create a friendly, simplistic mascot logo. Getting rid of the distracting background was the first thing, and simplifying out the astronaut into smoother, less blocky shapes help modernize it. I wanted to capture the vibe for the STEM program as a whole for the school as well while being fun and imaginative. For this, I incorporated a sleek and futuristic science fiction feeling, with clean stylized typography and contrasting pops of the color.
The iconography includes both items that would be used in the classroom, as well as science fiction related material to keep it interesting for the kids, who would be seeing this imagery the most.

SIGNAGE
After creating branding for the school that consisted of fonts, iconography, and a new mascot, we toured the interior and exterior to determine where we would be placing signage, wall wraps, and floor decals.
Most of the interior design uses the patterns and iconography seen above, as well as the school motto repeated throughout. The school walls included pops of purple, so I wanted the wraps to blend in with the environment. A few unique wraps included a timeline for their namesake, George Washington Carver, and people of color who had successful STEM careers.
A lot of the simplistic background choices include the rounded, friendly motifs to match the fonts, and mascot of the school.
